Project will transform desert into man-made oasis

A Norwegian environmental technology group has developed technology to convert salt water from Jordan's Red Sea into water usable to humidify and water greenhouses in the otherwise desert landscape.  If it works out, maybe we'll see one in L.A. in the years ahead!

Claremont Portside focuses on CMC environmentalism

If you were anything like me, as a nervous, short-on-sleep high school senior considering her fate for the next four years, you poured over a college ranking lists.  Oh, this place has the best food!  This one has the nicest dorm rooms!  This one has the biggest percentage of nose-pickers!  Well it's time, CMC, to revisit those lists.

On Earth Day of this year, the Princeton Review came out with its first Guide to 286 Green Colleges.  And, hooray, CMC made the list!  But guess who didn't?  Our neighbor the the north, Pitzer!  Surprising, right?
The Claremont Portside's Sara Birkenthal did a little investigative journalism to determine why our Pitzer brothas from a different motha didn't get their due credit as one of the greenies.  So relive your past, and check it out!

10/10/10

10/10/10 was a great day for Mother Earth.  350.org, an international organization hoping to create awareness and propel solutions to achieve 350 parts per million CO2 (we're currently at 388).

Yesterday, 350.org initiated Global Work parties around the globe for 10/10/10. Today they're boasting an amazing 7487 events in 188 countries!

Claremont celebrated with Anything But Cars (presented by the CMC bike shop with support from the Community Service Office) which involved sponsored shirts, a bike ride to the Claremont Farmers' Market, discounts on village shops, and a pledge to not use cars during the day.

SPEAR hopes you sincerely enjoyed your event wherever you celebrated and to keep the ball rolling on preventing climate change.

Sincerley,
The SPEARtans
